Mom’s Steak Tips

With only three ingredients – soy sauce, bourbon, and oil, this is the only way I remember my mom ever making steak tips. My mother never drank, but she was always sure to have a bottle of bourbon tucked away for this recipe.  It was one of those ‘special treat’ dinners that we only had when guests came over (which makes sense both in regards to flavor and that there is essentially no prep required).  I also  remember her making these once for my brother’s entire lacrosse team – but they must have been on sale, because tips are NOT cheap!  But, they are worth the splurge and the depth of flavor from this simple marinate does not disappoint.

Tonight we served the steak tips with sauteed mushrooms and onions as well as some garlic butter green beans with toasted almonds.  Then, the next morning made steak and eggs for breakfast with the leftovers.  MmmMmm.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup bourbon (I used Four Roses)
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • Salt/Pepper

Steps and Notes:

  1. Prepare the steak tips by lightly seasoning with salt and pepper
  2. Whisk together equal parts bourbon, soy sauce, and oil.
  3. Pour the marinade over the meat then cover and place in the fridge for at least an hour
    • Note: My dad reports “the longer the better”
  4. When ready to grill, remove from the fridge and drain the liquid into a saucepan. Boil for 10 minutes. This will reduce the sauce to a tasty glaze
  5. Grill the tips on a hot grill until the internal temperature is 135 degrees

Thoughts for next time:

  • No adjustments necessary!
